4/8/18 – Fresh Start!

Suppose you developed kidney disease and would die without a dialysis machine.  Although you would be grateful for a machine which prolonged your life, it would be very restrictive. Your life would now be governed by the hours spent on the machine.

Now suppose one day the doctor called, and told you that a kidney doner had been located, and a transplant was scheduled for the next morning. Several weeks after successful surgery the doctors informed you that your body had accepted the kidney and that you would never again need to use the machine. You have been cured! How ludicrous it would be for you to return, once more, to the kidney machine. If you returned to the machine your kidney would stop functioning, for it would be competing with the machine. What was once necessary, but confining and restrictive, would no longer be required (or allowed), due to the reception of a kidney.

Ridiculous right?  But even more insane is to return to an old and obsolete system call the Law, (Hebrews 8:13). In Christ, we have a NEW IDENTITY, A NEW COMMUNITY AND A NEW REALITY.

In our passage for Sunday, Galatians 3:23-29, Paul address both Jewish and Gentile believers.  His words to the Jewish believers are in 3:23-25. His word to Gentile believers are in 3:26-29.  Note in 3:23 he says “we were kept in custody under the Law.  He is speaking to fellow Jews, because we as Gentiles were never given the Law.  In 3:27, he says, “For you (Gentiles) all are sons of God through faith.”  Wait a minute, Gentiles are sons?  Yep, even though Jews believed they were the only sons of God, (Romans 9:4).

This is amazing and scandalous!  Gentile sons?  You betcha! But wait theres more!  We are also Abraham’s descendants and heirs according to the promise.

What a blessing!  Most Jews thought of us Gentiles as worthless, sons of disobedience.  “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved, (Ephesians 2:6).

What a glorious truth.  Yet sadly many believers today want to hook their hearts up to a machine.  Dear brother or sister this will destroy your heart!  You have a new identity, a new community and a new reality.  This Sunday as we open up God’s Word, I will show you what it is. If you need a fresh start join us Sunday.
