5/13/18 – Whose Your Mother?

As you can see from my teaching title, I focus on motherhood.  But not in the sense of you ladies, but in the spiritual sense.  Ironically, the passage for this Sunday deals with two different types of Mothers, a bond-woman and a free woman.  I speak of Hagar and Sarah.

This is Paul’s closing argument against those wishing to poison the river of Grace with works, those wishing to enslave with do’s and don’ts, those wishing to mosey on back to Moses. This is Paul’s theological trump card, Scriptural Smack Down, drop the mic moment!

Read through he passage a few time noting this outline:

A PENETRATING QUESTION, 4:21

A REVEALING OBSERVATION, 4:22-23

A CLARIFYING COMPARISON, 4:24-25

A STARTLING IMPLICATION, 4:26-30

A  CONCLUDING DECLARATION, 4:31

With these five points Paul neutralizes the poison of works based, human effort salvation.  Now while you may never be tempted with eschewing pork, or eating meat with milk, or worshiping on Saturday, you will always have to fight against the spirit of legalism. All world religions and many Christian denominations require works to either be saved or to stay saved.

In this day and age, like Paul’s, it is imperative you not only understand the Gospel but can defend the Gospel of Grace not Works.  The Holy Spirit guided Paul’s words to the Galatians, knowing that in the year 2018 believers would still need to know the Message of Life.

See you Sunday!
