10/21/18 – War Of The Worlds

The War of the Worlds, a science fiction novel published in 1898 by H. G. Wells tells the story of a Martian invasion of England.  In 1938, Orson Wells produced a radio show, when broadcast caused wide spread panic in the United States.  People did not know it was fictional.

I understand the panic.  As a child I saw the movie it scared me to death.  I had dreams of the green death ray haunting me down in my house. In both the book, radio show and movie, those on earth had no defense (like the Broncos run defense) against the Martians.  They were unstoppable, destroying everything, everywhere they went.  SPOILER ALERT:  While our largest guns had no effect our pathogens did.  And they died.  But what always was in the back of my mind was would the next invasion be with vaccinated Martians?

While Well’s WOW was fictional, there is a real WOW.  We were invaded thousands of years ago by supernatural beings cast out of Heaven.  The first skirmish was in the Garden of God.  Had it not been for God’s intervention, Planet Earth would be lost.
Satan wants not only the earth, the heavens but you and me!

C. S. Lewis is spot on saying, “There is no neutral ground in the universe, every square inch, every split second is claimed by God and counter claimed by Satan.”

In the days of Elijah, Satan like maniacal Martians was gobbling up the Northern Kingdom of Israel.  As I said last Sunday, in about fifty years these Jews went from believing in one God, to many gods, to do not mention God (Yahweh) in the realm of King Ahab.  He was counter claiming the land God gave to the Jews.  His God was Baal, not Yahweh.

But God had a man who could not remain neutral against such evil.  His name was Elijah.  Our message Sunday will focus on 1 Kings 17:1.  I have three points for Sunday:  THE MAN, THE MISSION and THE MESSAGE.

Satan continues to counter claim ground in our universe by first counter claiming ground in our heart.  Paul reminds us we are in a battle (Ephesians 6:10-17) and there is no neutral ground!  In Elijah we see what kind of men and women we must be, what our mission is and what we need to say.

I hope you will join me this Sunday as we learn how to fight in the WAR OF THE WORLDS!
