The headline in the Jericho Journal would have been DEATHLESS DEPARTURE! Missing death puts Elijah in rarified air, pun intended. Only two people in all recorded history have cheated death. That is right, only two people have been immediately ushered from this earth directly into the presence of God. Enoch was the first (Genesis 5:21-24). The Divine record says, “And Enoch walked with God, AND HE WAS NOT, because God took him.” Elijah was the second. But these two will not be the last. Some future day, a myriad of men and women who have not slept (death) will “all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of the eye, at the last trumpet….” (1 Corinthians 15:51-54)
In Sunday’s passage we are in the final days of the great prophet Elijah, and he is in the walking mood. This passage holds together and is moves along by geographical locations. Take a moment, open your Bible and trace the trek from Gilgal, to Bethel, to Jericho, to the Jordan, through the Jordan and out not the Promised Land, and then to Heaven.
But there is nothing boring about this walk to the FAR SIDE. Each one of the above mentioned cities were significant Holy Land locations.
It is always sad when a man greatly used of God leaves planet Earth. I think of how I felt upon hearing of Billy Graham’s passing. But when a man or woman of God dies, nothing of God dies. The work of God, and the coming Kingdom of God, is never hindered or delayed by death.
See you Sunday!
