7/28/19 – Prepare To Launch

THIS IS THE SECOND “YOU PICK THE PASSAGE” SERMON.

The text submitted is 1 John 3:9-10. It is one of the most misunderstood passages in the Bible. This no doubt is because 1 John is one of the most misinterpreted and misunderstood books in the Bible.

Our passage in question reads, “No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin because he is born of God. By this the children of God and the Children of the devil are obvious; anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.”

This passage has caused many a seasoned saint to doubt their eternal destiny. And this doubt has shamefully been reinforced by many who teach the Bible. One enormously popular pastor says, “In that small epistle John gives several marks to distinguish a true believer.” How did he get to be the gatekeeper?

If he is right (and I do not believe he is) this is a scary passage. But if I am right, this is a sobering and encouraging passage, exhorting us to take seriously our faith in our Lord.

But, in order to rightly interpret 1 John 3:9-10, we must first understand 1 John 2:28-3:3. And that is my charge for this Sunday.

Read through 1 John 2:28-3:3 (The chapter break in 3:1 is unfortunate). The phrase “See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us…” is connected to “born of Him” in 2:29.

1 John 2:28 is the theme of the book. John is preparing believers to have “confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at his coming.” I want everyone at Crosspoint to have this confidence. He promised to return for His Children. I take this to be the Rapture, 1 Thess 4:14-18, when we meet him in the air. Hence my title. While we are on earth we are in launch preparations.

And then In 3:1-3 I will show you A STARTLING DECLARATION, A THRILLING REALIZATION, and finally, A PURIFYING FIXATION. The following Sunday, I deal with the Children of God and the Children of the Devil, 1 John 3:4-10.

See you Sunday!
