THIS SUNDAY IN OUR CAST OF CHRISTMAS SERIES, OUR FOCUS IS THE MAGI WHO COME TO WORSHIP THE CHIRST/
The above picture is as close to the Biblical Text I could find. What? Where are the Shepherds, the manger and the camels? Well, they remain in the folklore of the church. If you read the text of Matthew you will not find them coming to aN animal enclosure, but a home. It does not say they rode camels. It does not say they were Kings (I know “We three Kings of orients are…). And nowhere does it say there were three of them. There had to be at least two, but there could have been 10. Don’t believe me read the text.
But even without a manger and mammals, this section of Scripture is both captivating and compelling.
My message has three parts:
(1) THE MYSTERIOUS MAGI AND THE TROUBLING QUESTION, 2:1-3
(2) THE MANIACAL MONSTER AND THE CONNIVING INVESTIGATION, 2:4-8
(3) THE MATCHLESS MESSIAH AND THE ADORING ADULATION, 9-12
Now here is your Christmas Quiz. Google the words to Henry Hopkin’s otherwise wonderful Christmas carol “We Three Kings.” Now open your Bible and note what we know are true and what church tradition tells us is true.
Think about the characteristics of the “star.” It has directional capabilities (it directs the Magi to the house), it moves, and it appears and disappears. Three things a SUN or real star cannot do. So, what is this star?
Next, the Magi most likely come from Babylon. I think they were believers. But where did they hear of this One born King of the Jews, and how did they link a star to Him
There were three reactions to the Christ: the masses, APATHY; Herod, ANGER; and the Magi, ADORATION. Today you still find those attitudes to the Gospel and The Christ.
The Angels announced PEACE (Shalom) at the birth. So, how do you harmonize Matthew 10:34-36 with this?
WE SHALL SEE THIS SUNDAY, CHRIST IS THE GREAT DISRUPTOR!
