7/5/20 – Freedom’s Founding Father

Two hundred and forty-fours years ago this Saturday our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence.  Like John Adams I believe it should be whole-heartedly celebrated.   In a letter he wrote to his wife Abigail, he said, “This day ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.” So enjoy the fireworks and parades and celebration – but also make sure to honor and thank God – make it a day celebrated “with solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.”

But neither Jefferson nor Washington were FREEDOM’S FOUNDING FATHER.  That was The God of the Bible.

This Sunday our focus is John 8:31-32.  But you will not understand these two verses without verses 1-30.  My message begins with one of the most intimate, compassionate and revealing interchanges our LORD has with anyone in the Bible, the woman caught in adultery.  It sets the stage for one of the “I AM’s” in the Bible.  You can read it in 8:12.  This leads to a verbal volley with the religious Judean rulers.  He concludes this spiritual squabble in 8:29.

As a result of the interaction between Him and the woman caught in adultery and the interchange following, “many came to believe in His Name.  They, unlike the Judean religious leaders would not die in their sins, but live forever, John 8:21,24.

They were now free from eternal death, or the penalty of sin.  But God wants them to be free of the power of sin.  He tells the how to in 8:31-32.  They must abide in The Truth He brings.

Our country, founded upon these Truths, has largely abandoned them. (I might add many Christians have abandoned them as well.) It is why we are in such a dangerous place now.  If those who BELIEVE DO NOT ABIDE, our country will be lost.
